After recess, we worked on our conditions for success at the computer lab for IRIS. Then after lunch, we had Human Sexuality with Mme. Nicole and then we watched a video on puberty for girls. After the video, we discussed girls menstration period. Then, we worked on portfolio work.

Student Blog Post - Today in Grade 4: "This morning, we did our morning routine and worked on our Social Studies museum posters. Students were asked the criteria for the poster. Then, students we had a lesson on fractions and looking at more complex fractions with parters and in groups. This afternoon, we began our Human Sexuality Unit in Health. We had a lesson on puberty changes. We reviewed the ground rules for this unit and discussed great parts of growing up and parts that are not great about growing up. Then, we discussed the body parts that are effected by puberty. Then students were encouraged but not obligated to ask questions in a question box. Discussion led by: H.T. |

Then we did our morning routine. After our morning routine we reviewed expectations for daily 5. After reviewing expectations we, continued our notes. The notes we were writing was our museum projects. Then we had physical education. In physical education we practiced our throw in's. Right after physical education we had recess. After rescue we had a snack. With our wonderful snack we watched a very educational video. The title of the video is c'est Pas Sorcier. After snack time we had a student present his social studies museum. It was a marvelous presentation. After lunch we silent reading in english. Then we had 2 more museums presentations. The presentations were absolutely wonder us. After the museums we had some meditation. The meditation helped us calm down. It was very peaceful. Then we did weebly. On post it notes, students were required to write what they have completed so far and what are our next steps. Then, we went to the computer lab to continue working on our projects. After lunch, we read in English, we had a lesson in Fractions and then we had student led lessons on equivalent fractions. Afterwards, students built a fraction wall in their Daily 3 groups. Finally, we had a discussion about our upcoming health unit. Students are encouraged to sign the letter as soon as possible. Then, we cleaned the classroom and completed Weebly." |

During physical education we played tennis with a partner. After recess, we worked on our volunteer tea card and some students helped with out display board. After lunch, we discussed the book report and the expectations for the assignment. Then, a representative from BOKS came to show us some great movement breaks. We meditated for a while and then we worked on our Social Studies Museum plan in groups. Students were asked to organize their plans and make sure that everyone was on the same page for research and the presentation. After Social Studies, we practiced our song for the volunteer tea." |

After recess, we ate snack because we did not have time before recess. Next, we continued on our bulletin board project. Afterwards, M. McKenna explained the questions for our math quiz. The math quiz was 4 pages and many students didn't finish. After lunch, we had music. In music, we worked on our recorder notes. Then, we had Physical , where we played Tennis with our partners. He installs solar panel's across Alberta and taught us all about what they are used for and how they are made. He demonstrated how the modules work and gave us great ideas for our science unit projects. After recess, we read in English and then we had math. Students worked on math questions and activities for our quiz tomorrow. Then, we worked on our Social Studies Museum plan. Students are encouraged to finish their plan as soon as possible. After lunch, we worked on our English Language Arts Fairytales and then we had physical education where we practiced techniques for tennis. After physical education, we worked on Science rotations where we looked at the different types of electricity. |

We discussed the importance of speaking French in class and how it is reflected in our report cards. We are very lucky to have a French Immersion program at VAS and we should take every opportunity to practice our French. After that discussion, we had a presentation from a few students. After lunch, we worked on transition words and sight words. Students were asked to use syllable strategies. Then, we played with money to help us count backwards with the Garage Sale on Friday." |

We went through situations where it is essential to speak with an adult. After lunch, we discussed the CBE Student Code of Conduct and then we worked on our Twisted Fairytales and Fables. Students were asked to look at the elements from our Fairytale and Fable units and find ways to look at each story from a different perspective or point of view. |

This morning we went to the computer lab to work on our social studies museum. After resese we ate snack. Then we read in French. Next we did a social studies plan for our museum. After lunch we had music, in music we played ukalaylies and recorters for our song for music funday. Then we had gym, in gym we played lecross. After recess we had a snack. Then we went to the carpet to have two math game presentation. After math games we talked about behavior at the carpet. Students were asked to write a paragraph in a particular text and circle or underline punctuation they seen in a particular text. After recess, we went to the computer lab to work on our Social Studies Musueum Projects. Students continued to work on their various tasks to create an interactive history museum using artefacts, technology and research. After lunch, we read in English and then we discussed what we do for our brain health and how we spread kindness in our communities (virtue)." |

Afterwards, we had a discussion on keeping your hands to yourself. Along with that, we watched a video in french called "Votre corps c'est votre corps". Then, we watched another video for our science unit. As we did so, we took notes about reducing waste on a yellow piece of paper. After lunch, we read in english (like always). Afterwards, we discussed about the upcoming book report in english. It will be due in 1 and a half months. Then we did science, where we wrote about 3 ways of how we can help save the environment. After lunch, we had music where we worked on our garage band activity and then we had physical education outside. After phys ed, we discussed expectations for student led conferences and we worked in groups to practice." |

We looked at all of the proper elements of a well developed paragraph and then looked at ways of identifying and changing paragraphs to best reflect the topic. Students were given a few examples of texts and they had to use their P.O.M.M.E.S. checklist to check where the mistakes were placed within each composition. They then had to work in groups to make sure that they have identified all of the errors in the text. After recess, we ate snack, read and we played an addition and subtraction math game. We reviewed our strategies in math and discussed where we use addition and subtraction in our lives. Afterwards, continued to work on our texts. This afternoon, we read in English and we watched a few videos of simple machines. Then, in groups we had a discussion about what new things we learned about simple machines. Then, we had a conversation about lockdown procedures. We had a lesson on math and correcting errors. Students worked on their samples of writing with a partner and they were asked to peer edit their work. Then, if students were finished they could work on their math. During recess, students had a physical education presentation with Bobby the gymnast. After recess, we kept working on our book report. In math, we started a new unit on addition and subtraction. Students worked in groups to create posters that showed what they know already, what they want to know and what they are ready to learn. Then, we looked at a number of different strategies that we will be covering in mathematics with addition and subtraction. This is meant to give students a better number sense when completing larger addition and subtraction equations. This afternoon, we discussed topics surrounding healthy friendships in Health and then we continued our research project presentations in Social Studies. |

Student Blog Post - Today in Grade 4: "This morning, we did are morning routine. Then we had physical education. In physical education we practiced for skiing and snowboarding. After recess, we had Science period. In Science, we started our centres for simple machines. We went through each centre one by one and discussed what we will be building in each centre. Then we watched a video about simple machines and discussed some important information. Afterwards, we had Mme. Nicole's class come in to practice the song that we will be singing together at the assembly. This afternoon, we started a new unit in English Language Arts, about Recount Writing. We recounted a story as a class using one word each. After a few turns we really started to notice the importance of writing chronologically. We began to write our own recount stories. In Social Studies, we had a group discussion about the 6 different regions we are doing research on. As a group, we had a moderator, a note taker and a presenter. After recess, we had our class pictures, then we went to the computer lab and then we came back to class to work on our storyboard for our Social Studies research project. We discussed the layout for our presentations including a Title Page, Introduction and Middle. This afternoon, we practiced our assembly song, looking at the lyrics and practicing a bit of the actions. Then, we discussed how we show generosity in our lives and we wrote about a time we were generous. Then, in our Daily 5 groups we worked collaboratively on writing a formal letter to someone. After recess, worked on our novel study for "Les cauchemars du petit geant". In groups, we discussed and wrote down what was the beginning, middle, end of our novel study. Students were asked to discuss and write down the characters, setting, problem and solution of the novel. This will help us with our novel study assignment later on in the term. Afterwards, we worked on our Daily 3 bulletin board project. Students were divided into four groups (organization, questions, drawings and descriptions) to help design our bulletin board for the month. Before lunch, we worked on our Social Studies Alberta pamphlet. After lunch, we had music class and physical education. In music, we went into our groups and practiced a song on the ukulele's. After physical education, we worked on our Science Plant projects. Finally, we continued our work in note taking, by looking at our Social Studies text book. After that, we looked over our homework for this week. There are two word problems for this week focusing on perimeter and geometry. Then, we had reading buddies with M. We talked about the what we need to include in an entry to make sure that our writing is clear and responds to all of the important elements. After recess, we continued to work on our plan and lyrics in small groups for our area and perimeter song. Students were encouraged to create a song that would teach area and perimeter to someone who may not know what it is and how to measure it. After lunch, we had a brief discussion about behaviour expectations and shared what our narrative writing subject was with the class. Students shared memories from when they were younger. Afterwards, we discussed strategies for taking notes and we began our English novel study with "Holes". Finally, we worked on Social Studies, developing a plan for a pamphlet on three Alberta attractions. After recess, we talked about the different ways we can take notes and comprehend what we are reading. Together we read a chapter from "Les Cauchemars du petit geant" by Gilles Tibo our French novel study. Students were encouraged to make connections between what we are learning in our narrative writing unit. Afterwards, we talked about what is a school portfolio, what it is used for and then we designed our own our portfolio to showcase our work. This afternoon, we had music class and physical education. Afterwards, we worked on our English narrative writing. Then, we talked about Genius Hour, a project that we will be working on every Friday. After French, we had physical education and the skill the we learned proper technique to pass and catch. After recess, we discussed the behaviour expectations during physical education with a substitute teacher. In mathematics, had a quick revision on how to mesure area and perimeter. We added another challenge to our challenge board. Afterwards, we did our Daily 3 math centres where we looked area and perimeter. After lunch, we worked on our narrative writing unit in English Language Arts. We looked at an example of narrative writing called "Indy's Life Story". Then we discussed our own memories from when we were younger and wrote an example in a narrative form. Student Blog Post - Today in Grade 4: "This morning, we did our morning routine which involved our silent reading, calendar, word and sound work, reviewing the 4,3,2,1 evaluation system, CCPD chants, O Canada, SPARK and Daily 5 Literacy Centres. After recess, we reviewed area and perimeter and did our Daily 3 centres. Student teachers from the University of Calgary came to observe our class today and take notes on what we were doing in class. After lunch, we had English Language Arts, where we continued with our Narrative Writing Unit by reading "Finders Keepers: A Bus Trip In India." The book talked about the different cultural practices of the peoples of India and what to see if you travel there. We made a number of connections between what students learned last year in Social Studies and the adventure that the character in the book went on. The overall message of the book spoke about when you find something that is not yours, make sure you give it back to the person it belongs to. After English Language Arts, we did a self assessment with a mock report card. Students had to give themselves an assessment on where they see themselves in different subject areas using the 4,3,2,1 work we have been doing since September. Students were asked to think about their French speaking, writing and reading and give themselves an honest mark. They also evaluated themselves in mathematics and behaviour (citizenship, character and personal development). After the read aloud, we talked about the elements of a story. This is part of our Narrative Writing unit that we have started. Then, we discussed the various parts of a story as a group and what makes a story interesting. After French Language Arts, we reviewed area and perimeter in Mathematics, looking at the vocabulary and real life situations where we would use area and perimeter at home, jobs, etc. We worked on an activity that we started yesterday in those two areas. After lunch, we had Music class, we learned about accordions and then had a special lesson on how they work. After, we had physical education, where we learned a few new exercises and played a game. After recess, we did the Daily 3 centres: Math by yourself, Math with a partner, and Math problems. After that, we had a discussion about what we found successful and what we found a challenge in our math centres today. After lunch, we had music. After music, we talked about our behaviour at lunchtime and what we could do to improve what the expected/unexpected behaviour is for lunchtime with Mme. Maria. We also wrote an apology letter to our lunch supervisor and talked about ways that we could improve by working as a team for tomorrow. After recess, in math, we continued with our unit in measurement by looking at the area of different objects. Learning how to calculate the area of an object by identifying the height and length of an object. We went into our Daily 3 groups and did a number of activities while trying to find the area. After lunch, we finished projects on Terry Fox and Orange Shirt Day. Finally, at the end of the day, in Science, we looked at different parts of leaves. We focused the areas of comprehension, reading with precision, fluidity, and identifying vocabulary. After recess, in groups we developed a plan for a video assessment on time and calendar by using concepts we have learned in mathematics so far this year. Students developed a plan and then presented it in front of their peers. They then had to create their own individual plan and examples for their own assessment video that they will be posting on IRIS in the next few days. We looked at the criteria that we wanted represented and the vocabulary we need to use to properly explain each section. After lunch, we continued to work on our plan for our video. Then, we discussed the importance behind Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters, looking at the reason behind our day of awareness and how can we show reconciliation. We learned a bit about Phyllis Webstad, who started Orange Shirt Day and listened to an audiobook of "When I Was Eight" a story of a young girl who went to a Residential School. Finally, we created our own orange shirts and represented ways that we could show respect and reconciliation for First Nations peoples. |

Then, following our monthly assembly we had our annual Terry Fox Run in support of cancer research and awareness. After the run, we completed two autumn art projects that focused on perspective and tied in to our science plant unit. Finally, at the end of the day we spoke about our expectations for our home reading and homework program. We handed out the homework folder with the description of our homework, ideas and a calendar (which we will fill out next week). We also had a reminder about Orange Shirt Day, a day designed to educate and promote awareness about the residential school system and the impact it had on First Nations families/communities across Canada. We hope that you can participate in this important cause. |

This morning, we looked at building our vocabulary in French. We created lists of words that we have used in French during the month of September. We then created a master list to add to our word wall which will help students in their writing. After recess we read the book "Le courage de Terry Fox", which looked at the life of the Canadian hero. We followed the book with a discussion and mini documentary in French about his life and legacy. Afterwards, we continued we continued writing in our journals reflecting on how. After lunch, we had music and physical education before finishing with a final activity about Terry Fox before our run tomorrow. At the end of the day, we spoke about Orange Shirt Day, a day designed to educate and promote awareness about the residential school system and the impact it had on First Nations families/communities across Canada. - M. This afternoon, we talked about proper behaviour outside, especially around our new outdoor learning space. Then we had physical education where we worked on a number of activities which will help us with our school run on Friday. After recess, we did a mini lesson in math on time and calendar work. Afterwards, we did our Daily 3 Math centres by ourselves in our designated groups. Math by myself, math with a partner and math writing. After lunch, we had music period. We did clouds with the bells and then we went to gym where we practiced for the Terry Fox Run on Thursday. At the end of the day, in Science, we looked at photosynthesis and how plants need oxygen, carbon dioxide, water and sun to grow.

This morning, Mme. Harbinson our resource teacher, spoke to us about the three steps that we need to take during a conflict with someone else at the school. We also performed some skits of situations where we might use these strategies. In physical education we practiced running for our Terry Fox Run. Then, we continued to work on our learning goals in French, Math and CCPD (Character, Citizenship and Personal Development). This afternoon, we looked at C.O.P.S. our self editing tool and we did a number of activities with Grade 4 sight words. At the end of the day, we practiced our learning goals in English with a partner to help prepare Meet The Teacher this Friday. "Today we looked at reading strategies to use when picking "just right" books. We reviewed our Daily 5 centres and looked at our expectations for each centre. In math, we looked at time and the measurement of time. We looked at analogue clocks and digital clocks. We looked at 24 hour clock times and did some activities around time. In the afternoon, we went over the Fire Drill Procedures and we went to our first Physical Education class of the year. In science today, we looked at different types of plants and where we find plants in our own lives." - Ezryn Tyers

In French Language Arts, we wrote a letter to our future selves, talking about our goals and what we would like to improve on this year. We looked over the Daily 3 program expectations and responsibilities and we finished our math challenge assessments. M. Trevor helped us with our computer log in and we accessed our Google Drive accounts and went to our Weebly page. This afternoon, we finished our identity project." - Students from Room 9

"We did french silent Reading, WE went over our Routine , we went over what we did last night. After that, we looked at our Daily 5 centres. We talked about the expectations for each centre. We did an art identity project. Then, we looked at The Daily 3 in mathematics program. Math by myself, math with a partner and math writing. Finally, we did the math review challenge to look at things that we learned last year and some new ideas. We also completed an English Language Arts activity." - Joah Folz
